Reality Check ("the Extension," "we," "us," or "our") is a Chrome browser extension that helps users identify missing context, nuance, or bias in news articles and web content. This Privacy Policy explains what information the Extension accesses, collects, and processes, and how that information is used, stored, and protected.
By installing and using Reality Check, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with these practices, please do not install or use the Extension.
When you click the Reality Check toolbar icon while viewing a web page, the Extension:
The Extension only performs this action when you actively click the toolbar icon. It does not run automatically or continuously in the background, and it does not monitor your browsing activity.
What we access: When you click the toolbar icon, the Extension reads the text content of the currently active tab — specifically the page headline and the main article/body text — using Chrome's activeTab and scripting permissions.
Why: This content is required to perform the core function of the Extension: generating a context analysis of the page you are viewing.
What happens to it:
What we access: On first use, the Extension generates a random, anonymous identifier (a UUID) and stores it locally in your browser using Chrome's storage permission.
Why: This identifier is used solely to apply a daily usage limit (a "fair use" cap on the number of free analyses per day) and, if you choose to purchase additional usage, to associate that purchase with your installation. It is not linked to your name, email address, Google account, or any other personally identifiable information.
What happens to it: This identifier, along with a usage count and timestamp, is stored on our backend (via Supabase) solely to enforce daily usage limits and manage any paid plan you activate. It cannot be used by us or any third party to identify you personally.
We do not collect, access, or transmit:
The limited information described above is used exclusively for:
We do not use any information collected through the Extension for advertising, for building user profiles, for selling or renting to third parties, or for any purpose unrelated to the single, disclosed function of the Extension.
The Extension relies on the following third-party services to function:
Google Gemini API — Page text you choose to analyze is sent to Google's Gemini API for processing. This transmission is subject to Google's own privacy and data-handling terms. We do not control how Google processes data on its end beyond the specific analysis request; we encourage you to review Google's Privacy Policy and the Gemini API Additional Terms of Service for details on their data practices.
Supabase — Our backend uses Supabase (a database hosting provider) to store the anonymous identifier and usage-count data described in Section 2.2. No article content is stored in this database.
We do not share, sell, or transfer any user information to any other third party for advertising, marketing, or unrelated purposes.
We take reasonable technical measures to protect the limited data we process, including:
No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. However, given the limited and anonymous nature of the data we handle, the practical privacy risk to any individual user is minimal.
Reality Check is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or the applicable minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect information from children. The Extension does not request or process any information that would identify a user's age.
Because the Extension does not collect personally identifiable information, most standard data-subject requests (access, correction, deletion of personal data) do not apply in the traditional sense — we have no name, email, or account tied to your usage.
However, you may:

The use of information received from Google APIs by Reality Check adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We access and use the minimum data necessary to provide the Extension's single disclosed purpose — generating a contextual analysis of content you actively choose to analyze — and do not use this data for any other purpose.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the Extension's functionality, legal requirements, or our data practices. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the Extension after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of India, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
